Portuguese pianist David Santos appears internationally in collaboration with singers and is the winner of the 7th International Competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music” in Graz, Austria (category Lied Duo) and the 1st International Schubert Competition for Lied Duos in Dortmund, Germany in 2009.
As a Lied pianist Santos played in distinguished halls like the Konzerthaus and the Philharmonie in Berlin, the State Opera Theater in Kassel, the São Carlos Opera House in Lisbon, the Arts Center deSingel in Antwerpen and the Tonhalle Zürich as well as at the Macau Music Festival in China and the Tanglewood Music Festival (USA). His recordings include Schubert’s Winterreise with baritone Luís Rodrigues for the label about music and a CD with Lieder by Schubert, Brahms, Schönberg and Busoni with Bass-baritone Tomasz Wija for Thorofon.
Santos owes decisive impulses for his artistic work to pianists Leonard Hokanson, Irwin Gage and Axel Bauni, with whom he developed intensive studies of romantic and contemporary Art Song repertoire. He graduated in Piano from the University of Music in Lisbon and the Indiana University School of Music (USA) as well as in Music Theory from the University of the Arts in Berlin and Lied Interpretation from the University of Music in Saarbrücken.
He holds teaching positions for Piano at the UdK (University of the Arts) in Berlin and for Lied Interpretation at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT in Weimar and the University of Music and Theater in Mannheim. He has given masterclasses at the Berlin Piano Academy, the Lisbon Conservatory and the University of Campinas in Brazil.
